Sei whale

Suborder: Mysticetes
Family: Balaenopteridae
Scientific name: Balaenoptera borealis
Size: from 12 to 16 m
Weight: 20-30 tonnes
Dorsal Fin: similar to the Minke Whale, but located further forward.

This is one of the smaller whales, 12-16 m in length. It is also one of the fastest which explains the lack of external parasites seen on its body. It is also known as the Sei Whale or  Rudolphi's Rorqual.

Distinguishing this whale from the Fin Whale is not an easy exercise. To help in the identification, we may retain the following criteria: the simultaneous occurrence of blowhole and dorsal fin; the color of his lower jaw is identical on both sides which is not the case for the Fin whale. These difficulties may explain why the presence of the Sei whale around our islands has been confirmed only in 2009 (observation and photographs by J. Detcheverry).

It is a migratory species, ranging from northern waters, where they feed, to the tropical waters where they breed. This species has been actively hunted. She is still on the IUCN Red List, in the category endangered species ...
