Harbor porpoise

Suborder: Odontocetes
Family: Phocoenidae
Common Name: porpoise,
Scientific name: Phocoena phocoena
Size: maximum 1.8 m
Weight: 27 to 88 kg
Dorsal fin: triangular, located in the middle of the back

This is the only species of cetacean with a local common name it is called "Poursie" (porpoise in English).

This is the smallest cetacean present in our waters, from May to October. Its size and behavior make it difficult to observe except in calm seas. He is shy and does not approach the boats and do not ride the bow wave. His blow is not visible but is particularly loud. The triangular dorsal fin is not very high. It occurs in temperate coastal waters of the northern hemisphere, rather solitary, in pairs or small groups of 5 or 6 individuals. The number of individuals in the region is unknown at present but is thought to be declining because these animals are vulnerable in several respects:spending time close to shore, and position in the food chain.
